Vice Admiral Zahir Uddin Ahmed, ndc, psc (Retd)

Former Chief of the Naval Staff, Bangladesh Navy from January 2009 to January 2013. Also served as Director General of Bangladesh Coast Guard, Commandant of Bangladesh Marine Academy and Commandant of Naval Training Institutes. Commissioned in 1978, Admiral Zahir served about 22 years at sea including 14 years command of different types of warships. He served as Fleet Commander and Area Commander in the Navy and Coast Guard. Also served in senior positions of Naval HQ, Coast Guard HQ and Inter-services HQ ( Armed Forces Division). He also commanded major bases of Bangladesh Navy.
A graduate of Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, UK, a graduate of Defence Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur, Dhaka, graduated from US Naval War College, Newport and also from National Defence College, Mirpur, Dhaka. He received various other advanced training including specialization in Navigation and Direction from Pakistan and various other courses from USA, UK, China, Korea and Netherlands. Vice Admiral Zahir has also undergone courses on Ship Building Management/Supervision in Daewoo Technical Institute including 18 months firsthand experience as Project Director of 100 Million USD modern Frigate BNS BANGABANDHU built in Daewoo Shipyard in South Korea during the period 1999 to 2001.
